Sustainable Travel Strategy

The overall objective of the Sustainable Travel Strategy project is to minimise the travel and transport impact of the University of Wolverhampton whilst ensuring staff, student and visitor journeys to our campuses are convenient, sustainable and affordable.

Key objectives

We are proposing four key objectives within the overall scope of the strategy these are:

• Minimising parking demands through the delivery of alternative sustainable travel and transport options.
• To devise, consult and launch a new holistic set of travel and transport policies and procedures.
• To devise, consult and deliver changes to the management of all university owned or managed car parks including the potential of an online, needs based (eligibility scheme) car park permit application system.
• If required undertake an options appraisal for increasing capacity at City Campus.

Current  & future initiatives

1. Reduce the need to travel and minimise the number of University business trips by providing technology and  

   training to support location independent working and virtual meetings.

2. Provide travel advice and support to new students and staff as early as possible to ensure that they make fully

   informed and sustainable travel behaviour decisions from the outset.

3. To promote and encourage the use of sustainable transport for trips generated by the University (staff, students

   and visitors), through the provision and targeted marketing of relevant travel information, support and  advice.

4. Encourage essential University business trips to be undertaken by sustainable modes, where possible and

   minimise the use of grey fleet.

5. Work with Network West Midlands to provide ticketing advice, investigate ticketing offers for staff and students.

6. Work alongside local councils to promote existing walking and cycling routes to campuses and lobby for improvements.

8. Ensure necessary inter-campus travel is carried out using sustainable modes

9. Work closely with key stakeholders and transport operators to ensure the opportunities for supportive

   measures, funding  and economies of scale are maximised

10. Investigate the introduction of a sustainable Car Share scheme

11. Manage the existing University car parking provision in a manner which prioritises capacity for those that

     have no reasonable alternative to travelling by car.

Electric Cars

Electric Cars are on the increase in the UK. The Society of Motor Manufacturers and Traders (SMMT) have reported that sales of hybrid vehicles more than doubled from 2014 to 2015 and that sales of pure electric cars have risen by about 50%. Government grants to help with the purchase price plus on-going investment in infrastructure mean that ownership of an electric car is not a wacky alternative, but a viable means of travelling more sustainably.
