All of our academic Schools and Institutes have areas of research strength, overseen by our established Research Institutes and Centres, many of which work closely with industry on large-scale projects.

In the most recent Research Excellence Framework (REF 2014) exercise, we achieved our best results to date. Our research was celebrated for its ‘world-leading elements’ across all areas submitted to the REF 2014, with 85% of our research internationally recognised or higher.

For the forthcoming REF 2021, we will enter all staff with significant responsibility for research aligned with 17 Units of Assessment (UoAs) - increasing the number of UoAs and staff submitted.
