Life on Campus FAQs

Safety on Campus

Road to Reopening @WLV

Face coverings are now mandatory in all parts of our campuses; this includes communal areas (for example, stairwells, corridors and when entering/exiting a building) and teaching spaces, including classrooms, lecture theatres and practical rooms.

When on campus, please ensure you have a face covering with you to wear.

Please be mindful that some staff and students are exempt from wearing a face covering due to a disability. This includes hidden disabilities, such as anxiety and autism. There is no requirement for people to prove that they are exempt from wearing a face covering, and students can choose to communicate their exemption in their way. Please be sensitive to this.

Everyone must understand that face coverings do not replace good hand hygiene and other safety precautions. This includes effective hand washing and hand sanitisers where soap and water are not readily available and social distancing.

The effect of the Covid-19 pandemic means that working and studying on-campus is very different.  The University of Wolverhampton is committed to ensuring that our students have the best learning experience possible. Still, we need to place the safety of students and staff at the heart of everything we do.

There are specific actions that are crucial for everyone to adopt to keep our campuses Covid-secure and as safe as possible:

  • Face coverings must be worn inside all University buildings, including lecture theatres, practical learning spaces (labs and studios), libraries (including PC areas), corridors, stairwells and teaching rooms.
  • Everyone must maintain 2 metre social distancing on campus, including students who may live in a household bubble.
  • Follow hygiene procedures, including washing your hands regularly with soap and water and making use of sanitising stations where available.
  • Clean work and study spaces before and after use, including the keyboard and mouse, using the cleaning products provided.
  • Follow all on campus signage to move around buildings and learning spaces safely. This includes one way systems and closed workspaces.
  • Adhere to the isolation and reporting guidelines set out in our Covid-19 reporting procedures. If you feel unwell or are displaying Covid-19 symptoms, do not come on to campus.

It is your responsibility as a member of the University community to be aware and abide by these guidelines so that everyone can be safe. Please take some time to review the principles to understand what is expected of you when you return to in person teaching.

View our Safety on Campus web page for more information.

The University has been and will continue to work closely with Public Health England on what to do if a staff member or a student is confirmed as having coronavirus. We are providing the information they need from us to assist with their Test and Trace processes.

  • Students who experience any coronavirus symptoms must not come on to campus.
  • If you are taken ill whilst on campus, you should return home immediately and avoid touching anything.
  • Everyone should cough or sneeze into a tissue that must be placed in a landfill bin; if no tissues are available, then the crook of the elbow must be used.
  • You must contact the NHS (111) and seek further advice.

Anyone who experiences Coronavirus symptoms or receives a positive test result must email: Covid-19help@wlv.ac.uk and provide the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Student Number/Department
  • Contact Telephone Number

Complete the online reporting form.

Contact your personal tutor/line manager to inform them that you are self-isolating.

Email: Covid-19help@wlv.ac.uk with the result of your test as soon as possible.

View our Covid-19 reporting procedures for more information.

The Government is stating that students are expected to have two lateral flow tests before returning to campus. They also say you should have two tests a week while attending in person teaching.

Staff working on campus are strongly encouraged to get two tests each week.

Visit our Testing webpage for more information, including where testing is available for our campuses.

Some people may feel more comfortable showing something that says they do not have to wear a face covering. This could be in the form of an exemption card, badge or even a home-made sign.

This is a personal choice and is not necessary for law.

You can download an exemption card template for your phone and print it from the government website, here www.gov.uk/government/publications/face-coverings-when-to-wear-one-and-how-to-make-your-own

In response to the Covid-19 pandemic, cleaning has been re-prioritised to focus on touchpoints – such as door handles to building entrances and WC facilities, handrails and lift buttons in high footfall areas at busy times of the day.

Toilets and washrooms will be cleaned more frequently throughout the day.

Hand sanitiser is also available at the entry/exit points of all main buildings.

You must self-isolate with your household for 10 days.

Do not come onto campus for learning activities, work or any other reason.

Email: Covid-19help@wlv.ac.uk and provide the following information:

  • Full Name
  • Student Number/Department
  • Contact Telephone Number

Complete the online reporting form.

Contact your personal tutor/line manager to inform them that you are self-isolating.

Return to campus when:

  • Your 10 day isolation period has been completed.
  • If you develop symptoms while you're self-isolating, the 10 days restart from when your symptoms started.

You may still experience loss of taste and smell for some time, but as long you feel fit and well, and do not have a high temperature, you can return to campus. If you are in any doubt call 119 or talk to your doctor.

View our Covid-19 reporting procedures for more information.

The use of lifts should be avoided where possible and used only by those who may be disabled or have medical problems that would be exacerbated by having to use stairs.
