Working in the UK

Most students are able to work part-time while they are studying, but some students might have a restriction preventing them from working.

Please check that you are allowed to work before applying for jobs.

National Insurance Number

If you are able to work you will need to apply for an National Insurance (NI) number before you start working.

You will need to be enrolled at the University of Wolverhampton before you can apply for an NI number, as you will need proof of your student status and your local address.

When you are enrolled, to arrange an appointment to apply for an NI number, call the ‘National Insurance Helpline’ on 0845 6000 643.

Non-EU/EEA students

If your visa stamp includes words to the effect of “No work or recourse to public funds”, it means you are not permitted to work at all.

  • Some students are only allowed to work up to 10 hours per week during term time  always
check your visa and come in to the International Centre if you have any questions.
  • If your stamp says “No recourse to public funds – Work (and any changes) must be authorised” it means you can work up to 20 hours per week during term time and full time during official university holidays.
  • Working more than the permitted 20 hours per week during term time is in breach of your visa conditions. If the Home Office becomes aware of this breach, they may take measures to remove you from the UK

EU/EEA students

Most students from the EU / EEA can work unlimited hours in the UK without the need for a work permit (for exceptions, see information regarding Worker Registration Scheme below). You will, however, have to apply for a National Insurance number BEFORE you find a job.
