BA (Hons) Professional Policing

This module will enable students to appreciate the importance of information and intelligence to key areas of policing. Students will examine relevant legislation/guidance underpinning information and intelligence in policing. There is a particular focus on how information and intelligence can help police operations. The module enables students to appreciate the issues that can arise when data management protocols are not adhered to. Students will become familiar with the main sources of information and academic research about this area of policing and be able to use these materials for research purposes.

This module will enable students to appreciate the purpose, benefits and challenges of response policing in a variety of contexts. Students will explore the function of response policing and the key issues surrounding response policing and attending major incidents. There is a particular focus on the key issues relating to the complexity and challenges of operational policing. Students will become familiar with the main sources of information and academic research about this area of front line policing and be able to use these materials for research purposes.

This module will require students to research evidence-based initiatives in the context of preventative policing and problem-solving in relation to road policing with a focus on national strategies. Students will understand how to engage in lawful, safe and effective front-line road policing though the use of scenario-based role play and continual self-reflection. Students will acquire an understanding of road traffic legislation, police powers, road traffic investigation procedures and the impact of road traffic incidents on families and the wider community.

This module introduces students to some of the major figures, theories, models, concepts and approaches that have shaped police practice and research. Students will be asked to think clearly and critically about the development of police thinking and theory (with particular regard to problem-oriented crime prevention, ethical decision making, the exercise of discretion, risk and evidence based policing).

This module offers the study of the main crimes against the person. It will cover the components of a crime including mens rea and actus reus, along with issues of causation and omissions liability. The module will cover the crimes of murder, manslaughter and non- fatal offences such as assault, battery, actual bodily harm and grievous bodily harm. It will then investigate how crimes may be proven by establishing all elements of the offence in the absence of a valid defence. Defences covered include the murder specific defences of loss of control and diminished responsibility, consent, insanity, automatism and intoxication.

Framing the Criminological World offers a critical exploration of explanations and understandings of crime through a criminological lens. The module provides students with an understanding of criminology as a theoretical and applied discipline. Therefore, the module analyses criminological theories of crime and deviance and explores the application of theories in real-life cases. The module focuses on a variety of forms of theory, from Labelling and Reintegrative Shaming Theory to Conflict Theory. The spatial and temporal dynamics of the criminological theory are examined with reference to debates on the carnival of crime and political agendas. Collectively the sessions enable students to develop a comprehensive knowledge and theoretical understanding of criminology as an applied discipline. Finally, it will explore criminological theory as a distinct criminological topic, whilst examining its relationship with social science broadly.

To provide students with sociological theories and perspectives that help to explain racialised differences, identities and ethnicities. To provide knowledge of the processes and patterning of racialised differences, identities and ethnicities. To examine contexts in which racialised divisions and inequalities continue and are reproduced, as shown in contexts such as education, work and media.

The module will introduce students to policing technologies and the prevalence of digitally-facilitated crimes, which are frequently evolving. Students will consider the role of the deep web, social media, hacking (and other forms of complex digital-facilitated crimes) and the variety of devices being used in policing and crime contexts.

This research module is required for you to gain your honours degree. You will be able to choose an area of policing to research in depth.

The module will require students to critically analyse professional standards in policing and the qualities of police accountability in practice. Students will consider the roles and responsibilities of police officers, police staff, police leaders, internal professional standards departments and external mechanisms of oversight and complaint in holding police officers to account according to appropriate and professional standards. Relevant standards such as the police misconduct regulations and the Code of Ethics, and the nature and effect of the police disciplinary process will be examined. Students will consider the complexity and challenges of operational policing and the difficulties of maintaining professional standards and delivering police accountability on the ground. Case studies of police officer misconduct and best practice will be examined.

This module spans all areas of public protection policing; policy, research, theory and practice. Students will be introduced to the diverse and complex nature of public protection policing and vulnerability. Students will understand vulnerability and the theories and concepts around how a person can become a victim. Students will develop an understanding of the powers and legislation relating to contemporary and significant areas of policing practice including, but not limited to, child sexual exploitation, county lines, child criminal exploitation, modern slavery, domestic abuse, human trafficking, female genital mutilation, sexual offences ,hate crime and mental health. Students will use this knowledge to critically explore complex situations using evidence based research. Students will understand the impact these offences have on the victim, their families, the wider community and the criminal justice system. Reference will be made to how vulnerable people are supported by the police and other agencies and how risk is managed. The concept of multi- agency working will be a theme throughout this module, with reference to serious case reviews and the management of offenders.
