BUCS Active 4 Challenges

Sign up to our challenge here or simply click the image above to see what challenges are currently running. Here you will be able to link any existing Apps you might use to monitor your activity such as free to use tools like Strava or you can manually submit evidence for your activity. The way each challenge is set up will determine if you need to add photo evidence or if you will be tracking your activity. For our first challenge we will just be asking for a photo. See your reward points build up to unlock the chance to win some prizes.Simply download the playwaze app and get started.

You can use Apple Health, Strava, Fitbit and Garmin for some of the challenges. Once signed up to a specifc challenge, the app will automatically retrieve your workout data from the aforemention apps.

Some challenges however, may simply ask you to upload photograhic evidence. Please read each challenge description to see exactly how to record your activity.

There are a range of rewards on offer but you need to accumulate the points first to redeem these! Therefore, make sure you are enrolled in challenge before completing your activity.

For taking part in each challenge, you will be rewarded with a specified number of points. You can then gain additional reward points for further engagements with the challenges. For example, in a distance based challenge, you may be rewarded with 20 points every time you record 1 mile.

Why not get off to a flying start by completing our first challenge (the Survey) to retrieve 50 points! For this, all you need to do is complete a short survey and upload a screenshot of your completed form afterwards.

Each challenge will vary to the next. Some will be steps based whereas others will be distance based. We are also hopeful of delivering some challenges on campus where it will be really simple to participate.

Mindfulness Walking Trails

To help you be more mindful in your day-to-day life, WLV Sport and the Students’ Union have created mindfulness walking trails across some of the University’s campuses,
offering an excellent way to clear your mind of clutter and restore your sense of focus. Walks range from 15 minutes to one hour and give you the chance to stretch your legs and restore balance into your life, whether that’s in between lectures, during your lunch break or to break up your study time. If you fancy meeting new people too, come along to one of our allocated walking timeslots on our social programme.

Exercise Snacking

Exercise Snacking is short bouts of exercise that are performed twice a day, with 5 minutes of exercise and 1 minute of rest between each exercise. The exercises themselves are safe for the home or office and don’t require a warm-up before starting. The exercises do not require any sports clothing or equipment; just a stable chair and a little space.

During each exercise bout, spend one minute performing each of the five exercises detailed below. Complete repetitions of each exercise at a self-selected pace that is comfortable to maintain for the full minute, with the aim being to complete as many repetitions as possible in that minute. If your legs begin to feel unduly sore during any of the exercises, you may of course stop that exercise at that time. Take one minute between each exercise to rest and intake water if necessary.

As with any exercise, you are likely to feel tired towards the end of the session and in the time straight afterwards. However, the principle of exercise snacking is that the bouts should not be excessively demanding. The primary risk when performing the exercise is loss of balance during the standing exercises. This risk can be mitigated by performing the movements at a controlled, and by holding onto a stable object such as a chair, table, or door frame.

Other tips for being active around the workplace include:

  • Take the stairs instead of the elevator whenever you can
  • If you sit at a desk, make it a habit to stand up every time you make or answer a phone call
  • Walk to a colleague’s desk or office to talk instead of using email or the phone. The personal interaction is an added bonus!
  • Create friendly competition between colleagues at the social sport sessions
  • Schedule walking meetings for informal discussions and brainstorming
