Walsall Campus: Food, fitness and fun

If you’re going to be based at our Walsall Campus, you’ll discover it has the strong community and identity of a smaller campus. It’s only a mile and a half from the Walsall town centre so you’re within easy reach of all the essentials. You may think you need to head to Wolverhampton or Birmingham in search of entertainment, but you’ll soon find that Walsall and the surrounding area provide plenty to keep you busy!

1) Nights on Broadway

Looking to unwind but don’t want to venture far? You’ll be pleased to discover what’s on offer at the SU at Walsall Campus. It’s a great place to unwind between – and after – lectures. You can fuel your studies, your chores or your down-time with a coffee; grab a game of pool or do battle on Xbox; or get to know your new best-mates with karaoke and quizzes. You needn’t miss out on special events like open air cinema showings at City Campus either, as you can simply hop on to the free campus bus service to get you there and back for free.

2) When hunger strikes

Stomach rumbling? As a student, you'll find competitvely priced meals at our campus catering outlets all year. But if you fancy a change of scenery, head to the Waterfront where you can grab a bite to eat (don’t forget your student discount) at restaurants such as Brewers Fayre, Bella Italia, Hungry Horse and TGI Friday’s, or there are student favourites such as Nando’s at The Wharf Shopping Park.

Alternatively, if you’re looking for some pub grub or want to be quiz champion, a 15 minute walk will bring you to the door of The Bell pub from Ember Inns, or in the other direction, The Cambridge offers a traditional pub atmosphere with food, quizzes and somewhere to watch the latest sport.

3) Stretch that body

If you’re a sports lover, you’ll be well catered for at our Walsall Campus with our inspiring selection of sports and physical health courses supported by the latest facilities and equipment, not to mention inspiring and informed staff. From our 3G pitch to the Judo Centre for Excellence, we’ve got all bases covered. Or if you fancy something more challenging, you can try your hand at sailing, windsurfing and canoeing, with Walsall Outdoor Pursuits.

Why not let Olympic Medallist (and BSc (Hons) Strength and Conditioning Class of 2019 graduate) Kristian Thomas show you round our campus?

4) Have a reel good time

There’s nothing quite like seeing your favourite films on the big screen. So when you’re feeling terrestrial tedium, streaming sadness, or Netflix negativity, head to The Light cinema at the Waterfront. If you're feeling frivolous, you can grab a cocktail at the bar, or fill your belly with their pizza + film deal for £15, Mondays to Fridays! We think that’s a pretty good way of catching up on the latest blockbusters at a knock-down price. Did you also know you can study film and media with us?

5) They say laughter is the best medicine

If concentrating on your studies leaves you in need of a good laugh, why not head to Walsall Arena and Arts Centre? Only 15 minutes’ drive from campus, you needn’t break the bank for a taxi and night of entertainment from comedians including the likes of Dom Joly, Milton Jones, and Ed Byrne. Or, if you secretly long to be the star on stage yourself, perfect your own act with our performing arts courses.

6) Walking on sunshine

Malvern may have its Hills, Telford may have its Wrekin, but Walsall has the Barr Beacon, so get outside for some fresh air and amazing views! We were spoilt over the summer with great weather, but even if it’s not so sunny, getting outdoors and stretching your legs will do you, your health, and your studies, the world of good. So head out to nearby Palfrey Park or check out the gorgeous autumnal colour at Walsall Arboretum. If you’re a nature-lover, head to Park Lime Pits park and nature reserve – you never know what you might see and can get involved with events like bat walks and forage trails.

Stretch your legs – and mind – with one of our sports degrees.

7) A spot of culture

Need a break from your studies? Why not embrace the Black Country with a visit to Walsall Leather Museum or Black Country Living Museum? Or for something even more niche, explore the local area each September for free with Heritage Open Days.

If you've had enough of looking at a screen, visit The New Art Gallery Walsall where your eyes can take in works from artists including Constable, Degas, Matisse, Monet, Picasso and Van Gogh.

8) Footballs and glitter balls

If you can’t resist a tribute act, like to get dressed up, or perhaps like to hear from some inspiring names from the sporting world like Graeme Souness or Phil ‘The Power’ Taylor, head down to Walsall Football Club The Venue to experience some of the eclectic entertainment they have on offer. Or what better way to spend your weekend than supporting your local team or rediscovering the love of playing sport? Whether you’re cheering on Walsall FC, Walsall Rugby Club or Willenhall Wanderers netball team, you’ll instantly find you belong to a new family.
