Post-compulsory Education (CertEd & ProfGradCertEd)

The programme is a two year part time course designed for trainers, teaching assistants and teachers already working in an adult education setting. It provides a nationally recognised qualification for post compulsory education (PCE) practitioners and will equip them with the knowledge and skills to teach effectively within the sector.

There are two options:

  • The Undergraduate Certificate in Education is aimed at vocational teachers who do not hold a degree but hold level three or above qualification in their subject specialism
  • The Professional Graduate Certificate in Education is designed for people who already hold a degree

You will be an in-service teacher employed within the Lifelong Learning Sector and able to provide evidence of at least 150 hours of teaching practice experience over the duration of their award.

You should hold a Degree in the subject area in which you are teaching.

Two satisfactory references are required, one employer from your Line Manager and one academic.

Where applicants hold a degree (required for PG H) or a level 3 (required for Cert Ed) that does not demonstrate a subject-specific link to their teaching (with the exception of Maths, English and/ or ESOL teachers*) then in addition, applicants will need to provide a reference from one (or more) employer, and evidence of recent (within the last three years) relevant vocational/curriculum experience at Level 3 or equivalent or higher (if PG H) in support of the application. Experience will be considered in specialisms where no Level 3 qualification exists. All applicants are reminded of the need to upskill in each of their subject/ vocational areas.

You will be required to demonstrate achievement at NQF level 2 in English and preferably Mathematics. If you have not achieved NQF Level 2 in Mathematics, you need to work towards an NQF Level 2 whilst on the programme.

Applicants who hold a Certificate in Teaching in the Lifelong Learning Sector may apply for Recognition of Prior Learning (RPL) subject to university procedures.

Most students will be able to apply for a loans to pay for these subject to eligibility. To find out more information please refer to the government Student Finance website.

Changes for EU students:

The UK government has confirmed that EU students starting courses from 1 August 2021 will normally be classified as having Overseas Fee status. More information about the change is available at UKCISA:

EU citizens living in the UK with 'settled' status, and Irish nationals living in the UK or Ireland, will still be classified as Home students, providing they meet the usual residency requirements, for more information about EU Settlement Scheme (EUSS) click here.

Self-funding:

If you don’t want to take out a loan to pay your fees or if you aren’t eligible to receive a loan, you might want to take advantage of the University’s scheme to pay by instalments: See How to pay. For more information please contact the Gateway.

Your employer, embassy or organisation can pay for your Tuition fees:

If your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.

Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund. for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
