The study of health at the University of Wolverhampton offers a fantastic and exciting opportunity to develop your knowledge, skills and experiences in order to enter into a range of careers relating to health.

The NHS is one of the largest employers in Europe, therefore there are lots of career opportunities for graduates, but you won’t be restricted to the NHS; many of our graduates are employed in such diverse areas as Health Promotion, Smoking Cessation, Occupational Health, Housing and Health Information Support Services.

The Public Health Studies department at the University of Wolverhampton have excellent partnerships with local and national stakeholder and employers across the globe. As we have such a long history in offering courses in public health, health studies and health and social care, we have a large network of alumni, many of whom occupy senior positions in health-related roles across the globe. These connections, networks and links assist us in ensuring our courses meet the needs of potential employers but also provide students with a network of contacts for work experience and placements and can assist in their search for employment.

We have great relationships with our local Public Health and Social Care Directors and their teams, as well as Local Authority staff and voluntary and community sector organizations. We have also built good relationships with the Royal Society of Public Health (RSPH) and are one of only two higher education institutions to have secured a formal partnership with them - we also offer our students the opportunity to receive complementary student membership of the RSPH.

To enhance the employability of our students our courses are also aligned to many frameworks and competencies; these include:

  • Public Health Professional Practice Framework,
  • Public Health Skills and Knowledge Framework,
  • UKPHR Practitioner Registration Competencies
  • IUHPE Health Promotion Competencies
  • ASPHER's European Public Health Core Competences

Dr Ranjit Khutan, Head of the Public Health Studies Department, is also a Board member of the UKPHR: the independent, dedicated regulator for public health professionals in the United Kingdom.

The Public Health Studies department at the University of Wolverhampton has a long and well-respected history of providing public health, health studies and health & social care programmes to overseas students. For example, our Master of Public Health (MPH) is one of the longest running MPH courses in the UK and is an internationally recognised programme that is respected across the globe. International students who have studied on this and other programmes in the public health subject area have contributed to the development & enhancement of public health practice and policy, both in the UK and internationally, benefitting from our focus on the wider social determinants on health & wellbeing and those that focus on the socio-ecological model of health.

We also offer our students an international experience so they can take advantage of the many opportunities available across the world, through our “Health in India” field trip which is available as an optional* programme to all students.  This two-week course enables students to learn about health care in India, meet with health care providers in Non-Governmental Organisations (NGOs), as well as visit places of historical and cultural interest.

We have been delivering this programme every September since 2015.  Through an experiential learning approach – where instead of lectures we provide opportunities to experience the real world of health and provide opportunities to meet with health professionals and the public - students have explored health issues with private and government health workers in cities and rural areas, and with workers at NGOs and community health outreach programmes serving the slums around Delhi's business district. Students also interact with students at University’s and professional education institutes.

Students are also encouraged to engage in our International Conference on Global Public Health that is held annually in Wolverhampton, and the many other international opportunities available across the University.
