New Journalism lecturer broadcasts the news of a £5 million investment in facilities

The University of Wolverhampton has invested £5 million to bring industry standard facilities to its new Screen School – and a new high-profile lecturer for its Multimedia Journalism degree course is all set to broadcast the improvements.

Gareth Owen, previously working at ITV Central News, has joined the University’s School of Art and is teaching Multimedia Journalism degree students in the new Screen School based at its City Campus in Wolverhampton.

New £5m Screen School

Wolverhampton Screen School will be the ambitious epicentre for stimulating screen based culture, education, research and industrial development within the region and beyond.

The new Screen School is aimed at boosting skills in the digital arts and media industries, offering a range of courses including Computer Games Design, Film and Television Production, Animation, Multimedia Journalism and Media. The new industry standard facilities include a green-screen, three-camera TV studio with an adjoining production gallery. There is also a new radio studio which reflects the layout of BBC local stations. News readers have access to a second bulletin studio and the technical kit and software will enable the replication of the workflows of national news journalists and the running orders of professional news programmes.

Students also have full access to a range of high-end audio and video recording facilities through our Media store.

Light House Media Centre

A unique facility for the study of film and media in the West Midlands. It features two purpose-built professional cinemas, ensuring that, you get to see films how they they were meant to be watched, whenever possible; with full power and resonance on the big screen.

Cinema One is the main cinema at Light House, with a seating capacity of over 200 students.

In Addition

We have access to a specialist in-house digital printing service – the Print Support Hub. Alongside Media Stores with dedicated kit for Media and Multimedia Journalism students. We even have our own Art Materials Shop, which stocks an extensive range of art materials.

Print Support Hub 

The Print Support Hub is a technically supported, open access area. It offers all School of Art students a range of specialist printers that are capable of printing onto a vast array of different materials.

Including:

  • A3 Risograph printer
  • 2 medium format high-end Epson printers (A4, A3, A3+ and A2)
  • Large format thermal lithographic printer
  • Large Format Mimaki textile printer
  • Large Format Mimaki textile printer

The room also offers two large format scanners that will scan artwork up to A0 size.
