Statement:

With an interest in slowing down the viewer’s perception, and working with conceptual themes, my final project addressed a discreet labour and pointless act of renovation. Repetitive and labour-intensive processes were employed, causing the viewer to spend longer looking at the work. Being initially unable to see the time and labour employed in ‘Bike Renovation (39 Coats)’, not only highlighted the notion of a discreet labour, but also provided access to an otherwise unobtainable idea through encouraging a more active viewing of the work.

Investigating the notion of skill and deskilling within art, paint was the most appropriate medium to work with, enabling excessive layers to be applied to the object’s surface. Working with objects which are typically painted to renovate, and the excessive application of paint, addressed the object’s continual and pointless renovation, drawing upon themes of repetition, duration, perception, and time, providing an intriguing visual form for the spectator.

Titles were also significant to my work throughout the final project, subtly informing the viewer of the labour employed in making. It is not until the spectator has engaged with the title and artwork, that the physical material labour, and the immaterial skill - the idea behind the work - is made apparent.

I plan to share my passion for art with young people, encouraging them to be creative.
