Join Dr Max Stewart as he talks to glass and ceramic artist Chris Day about his work and personal Story.

Chris is a bi-heritage (Jamaica/ UK) artist and uses his craft to navigate what it means to be black in the UK. And also, white.

'Studying as a mature student and graduating from The University of Wolverhampton I have been able to develop work which involves black history and identity and try to reignite the conversation surrounding these issues'.

Chris Day recently graduated from the University of Wolverhampton where he studied for a Masters in Design and Applied Arts. In 2019 he was selected to exhibit as part of the prestigious British Glass Biennale. His work ‘Blown, Bound and Bold’ can currently be seen as part of London Craft Week at the Vessel Gallery.

In his PhD research study, Dr Max Stewart has investigated the colouring process of Amalric Walter (1870-1959) and places it in a modern studio context. It also repositions the historic and scientific analysis of pâte-de-verre from being a tiny esoteric process with a one hundred year-old history to one which is universal and spans three and half millennia. Stewart's work has been requested by major research institutes across the world including the Rakow Research Library in Corning NY, USA, the archives of the Musée de l’École de Nancy, and the Inventaire General de Lorraine, France. His PhD was the first joint PhD between Edinburgh College of Art and Edinburgh University.
