An interest in isolated instances of palimpsest evident in everyday situations informs Andrews’ practice. He is drawn to layers of history that may be revealed through the seemingly insignificant features discovered on mundane surfaces. These overlooked details provide the artist with a point of rupture that both signals something of the past and asserts a presence in the now.

Currently focusing on brick walls, his background in architecture influences a predisposition to recognise anomalies such as holes and cracks. As an artist he then goes on to imbue the disruptive effect on the surface of these tiny ruptures with an elevated significance.

Andrews works across a range of drawing and painting media. His current paintings are in oil paint on wallpaper, to part of which he has applied a wax coating. In these, he reduces brickwork to a subtly rendered grid, skewed by perspective and distorted locally by intrusions on its surface. He initiates interplay between reality and its representation: an image alluding to a wall is made on strips of paper manufactured specifically to be applied to a wall. In displaying this unadorned, simply suspended from the wall surface, he declares that, in spite of any claim to the status of art work, at the end of the day it is just paper hanging on a wall.

Degree Show 2021, Wolverhampton School of Art, George Wallis Building, University of Wolverhampton

Over the last few weeks we have had a film crew on site in the School of Art recording student experiences and their work. The last year, has undoubtedly been a huge challenge to students and staff in the School of Art. We have found ourselves working at home in make-shift spaces and often with limited materials and kit. Our staff and students have been hugely inventive in finding opportunities and outlets to keep learning live  - and this, in itself, is a testament to our creativity and resilience as a sector.
