Sarah Parker

MA Fine Art

Sarah Parker is a native of the West Midlands and has spent her working life teaching Art and Photography in inner city schools; the last five years in a Pupil Referral Unit, for students aged 14 -16 with behavioural, social and mental health issues. Her work is designed to represent the anger, frustration and rebellion that she witnessed in her students.

All the material used in the exhibition was sourced from broken reinforced glass that students have kicked and punched over the last twelve months. The artist gathered the smashed glass by enveloping it in sheets of adhesive plastic. Later, she would carefully reconstruct and preserve the intricate pieces of glass using an epoxy resin. The sculptures often took weeks as she attempted to recreate the point of impact, like a three- dimensional jigsaw.

The juxtaposition of the delicate fragmented, translucent glass, reinforced with rusty, opaque wire is meant to provoke, challenge and engage the viewer, whilst still being visually and texturally appealing. Her work has evolved into a questioning of an object’s ability to retain and express latent emotions.

Degree Show 2021, Wolverhampton School of Art, George Wallis Building, University of Wolverhampton

Over the last few weeks we have had a film crew on site in the School of Art recording student experiences and their work. The last year, has undoubtedly been a huge challenge to students and staff in the School of Art. We have found ourselves working at home in make-shift spaces and often with limited materials and kit. Our staff and students have been hugely inventive in finding opportunities and outlets to keep learning live  - and this, in itself, is a testament to our creativity and resilience as a sector.
