Rachael Kara Heath

MA Fine Art

Drawing together diverse themes associated with music, psychology and environment, Heath’s paintings address the human conditions and concepts around sensory deprivation, restraint and incarceration.

Whilst producing the work the artist is physically and mentally restricted in all sorts of ways, from the removal of sight, to being engulfed by punishing levels of sound, to periods of intense isolation. The act of painting for Heath is subject to the result of imposed psychological traumas that inform and dictate the mark-making process within the work.

Lockdown restrictions and the affect on mental wellbeing instigated the works during two periods of recent trauma during the national pandemic.

Heath’s work uses these powerful subjects to create experimental visual metaphors aided by the energy of both internal and external environmental factors. Questioning the emotional and physical need, Heath’s work sets to play on the subconscious with the above traumas enforced. In achieving this, it allows space for the immersion and embodiment of mark-making and exploring the primitive, fluid and captivating affects on the subconscious mind; breaking through the barrier of constraints imposed.

Degree Show 2021, Wolverhampton School of Art, George Wallis Building, University of Wolverhampton

Our staff and students have been hugely inventive in finding opportunities and outlets to keep learning live  - and this, in itself, is a testament to our creativity and resilience as a sector.
