Kirsten Archer

MA Fine Art

Within her paintings, Archer explores notions of impermanence in the modern-day landscape. Focussed on the artist’s observations around her neighbourhood area she is interested in highlighting what may be considered as insignificant, mundane and overlooked. The ongoing process of the reclaiming of nature with its uncontrollability against the orderly structures of buildings, is also a source of interest to the artist and this cycle of degradation over time provides visual cues that instigate many of the studies produced. Urban spaces are encountered on her journeys through her neighbourhood and documented as a constant reminder of renewal.

The artist uses watercolour with acrylics and also incorporates collage elements to investigate ever-changing depictions of space. The placing of these landscapes in constricted settings, such as cardboard boxes and small wooden structures instigates ideas around the transient appearance of the urban environment.

Concerned with how marks are made on the landscape and how these man-made or natural ruptures intertwine and define a space Archer examines layers of history, revealing the old and the new, reflecting change and uncertainty, depicting contemporary urban spaces as they shift and dislocate, remaining in a constant state of flux.

Wolverhampton School of Art Graduate Showcase 2021

We are delighted to announce our end of year graduate showcase highlighting the work of our final year students in Art, Design and Screen based subjects.

Degree Show 2021, Wolverhampton School of Art, George Wallis Building, University of Wolverhampton

Over the last few weeks we have had a film crew on site in the School of Art recording student experiences and their work. The last year, has undoubtedly been a huge challenge to students and staff in the School of Art. We have found ourselves working at home in make-shift spaces and often with limited materials and kit. Our staff and students have been hugely inventive in finding opportunities and outlets to keep learning live  - and this, in itself, is a testament to our creativity and resilience as a sector.
