Beauty is in the Eye of the Microscope

My work provokes, intrigues and broaden people's minds to see what is generally unseen with the intent of enlightening and altering the viewers perceptions of varied bugs and insects through combining the science of entomology and art.

Having previously studied Fine art, I have incorporated my photography and videography skills to demonstrate the beauty within something that is otherwise considered scary and repulsive by observing these critters on a microscopic scale revealing visions of vibrant colours, unique patterns and delicate forms.

The hoops symbolise the view through the microscope as I see it and the projection allows the viewer to interact with the work, to see and experience how the imagery appears on them, on their clothes and their skin, to cause a reaction whether it's appreciation, admiration, disgust or horror.

My practice is influenced by the works of Mat Collishaw, his Insecticide series in particular where he flattened various insects between glass slides and used a desktop scanner to capture them. Along with drawing influences from the construction of Zandra Rhodes's 50 Years of Fabulous exhibition, set up by the museum's curator, Dennis Nothdruft who worked with Rhodes and set designer and art director Marta Soriano, in addition to Olafur Eliasson's In Real Life exhibition where he was able to create an immersive experience for the viewer, my ambition was to achieve something similar within my installation.

Degree Show 2021, Wolverhampton School of Art, George Wallis Building, University of Wolverhampton

Over the last few weeks we have had a film crew on site in the School of Art recording student experiences and their work. The last year, has undoubtedly been a huge challenge to students and staff in the School of Art. We have found ourselves working at home in make-shift spaces and often with limited materials and kit. Our staff and students have been hugely inventive in finding opportunities and outlets to keep learning live  - and this, in itself, is a testament to our creativity and resilience as a sector.
