Time, place and memory and the ephemeral relationship between the three are the driving force underpinning the art practice of Cheryl van Goethem. She explores visual language through the juxtaposition of objects and materials, responding to the forms they provide and their physical limitations. Using narrative, subversion, reordering, disruption of the normal, daily rituals and everyday life, she creates abstract assemblages bringing new meanings. Walking informs her process, stimulating thought and rhythm and providing a rich source of material and visual content connecting with place, time and memory.

Drawn to worn surfaces where line, image and colour have disintegrated with the passing of time, observing the ageing processes but ultimately having no control over them, she exploits these qualities questioning the value society places on objects and how these things ascribe meaning to the places and times we inhabit.

Always curious for new experiences, journeys and discoveries, the artist continues to be experimental in her work challenging tried and tested practices and materials to create a personal alchemy of nature and human endeavour, control and chance.
