MA Art and Design by Research

‘The Phantom Complex’ by MA Student Bethan Whitehouse was created in memory of the artist’s late Father who passed away in a motorcycle accident in 2016. Using the creative medium of photography, Whitehouse intended to find the likeness between her grandfather, boyfriend and late Father. Finding this likeness was a sense of grounding for Whitehouse’s grief, finding fragments of her Father in other male individuals in her family. Using this focus begged the question of identity within loss, and how we perceive death and grief within our day to day lives. Whitehouse also continued to research the portrayal of death within social media, and within our subconscious mind.

Within ‘The Phantom Complex’, portraits of Whitehouse’s Grandfather, boyfriend and late Father are layered upon each other and printed in the darkroom. Developer is used to portray the different stages of grief and how it is almost a wash which comes over us over time. The images are left to be perceived in different ways by the audience, as is death.

Our staff and students have been hugely inventive in finding opportunities and outlets to keep learning live  - and this, in itself, is a testament to our creativity and resilience as a sector.
