Rachel Carless

"I’m Rachel Carless and I'm 29 years old and I'm a single mother to a 6 year old boy. I started university in my late 20s as I’ve always wanted to be a journalist but never thought I was clever enough. I was so excited when I got on to the course. Getting accepted was an achievement alone but being in university has been an absolute dream. I've always dreamed of having a graduation ceremony since I was little girl and it’s all been about making my dreams come true and doing a course I’m so passionate about."

Journalism is my absolute life’s ambition … I've truly enjoyed my time collecting my work each and every week.

As each new week began it was a new challenge I would face and I would have to think how I was going to approach my news pieces each week. Gathering the news each week for me was amazing it was like being in the real world, working to deadlines and having to answer to our editorial mangers that day. It pushed me to be the best that I knew I could be.

My practical work is top notch work because I put the time and effort into my course, I have been very open to constructive criticism because it made me the person I am today…

For me I loved collecting and presenting the news. I'd feel this kind of adrenaline going through my body because, even at the age of 29, I was so excited to present the news and show just how capable and good I am. My high grades proved exactly what I knew I could do.
