Julia Oleksiak

"Julia Oleksiak is a West Midlands based image maker who specialises in abstract and surrealistic collages with themes of the abnormal and grotesque, nature and form are combined with her imagination, producing intriguing and unsettling results. She uses bright colours and texture to bring together delicate and soft floral elements and poses them with the weird and wonderful, creating her surrealistic images that are eye-catching and uncomfortable in equal measure. She likes to experiment with her work, often that leading to her finding new ways of merging different themes and subject matters together, creating weird and surrealistic images."

I am a West Midlands based image maker that’s obsessed with colour and texture. I love creating abstract and surrealistic pieces of work that utilise flora, fauna, and delicate elements from the natural world which can be seen in my linework pieces and collage. I am a creative hoarder, and collect imagery to be utilised in my compositions, with elements sourced from magazines, photographs, dried flowers and anything else that carries meaning to help me communicate visually. I like to mix the sweet, the soft, the colourful and the weird together, creating images with strange undertones which represent the ideas in my head. My work is process-driven and often I ‘go with the flow’ when it comes to creating my work. Complimenting my photomontage and drawing, I also enjoy photography, capturing various colours and shapes around the world that influence my compositions. My favourite way to work is with a nice cup of tea next to my window, with my music playing through my speakers, sketchbook in hand ready to experiment and create textures, sketches and collages inspired by the things around me. As I leave University and move further into my career, I want to begin teaching, inspiring and offering mentorship, help and guidance to students, adults and the wider community, creating images and showing the world what goes on in my head through artworks and give them the tools to do the same. I want to inspire those around me to use their creativity and utilise it to create amazing things.
