Fynn Riseborough

"Fynn Riseborough is a digital illustrator from the Northeast. Fynn’s work is largely focused on narrative illustration, with an emphasis on comics and graphic novels. For this reason, his style will usually change to fit the type of narrative being presented; and the focus of his art is often atmosphere, gesture, and expression. An example of this would be his recent project “The Cold Snap,” a slow-paced horror Comic that uses colour and pacing to convey the uneasiness of the science fiction world that was designed for this narrative. He intends to continue developing a long-running web series in future."

The specific niche of comics has always taken my interest. Fascinated by the variation of styles in every graphic novel or Japanese manga, my goal has always been to create my own original comics. These would feature my own characters, my own worldbuilding, and my own storytelling. I intend to continue learning even after my degree. My work often references those who excel in their field such as Marcos Mateu-Mestre or Katsuhiro Otomo, whom I have observed and written about extensively. My focus on narrative illustration means I am always looking to tell a story through still images whether framed as a comic or not. This is a direction I have been going in for a very long time, although the direction was never solid until I applied for higher education. Thanks to my studies at University, I have trained my creative discipline. I am no longer planting the seeds of my ideas and neglecting them! Instead, I am developing my work ethic and growing them into trees myself. I am prepared to take the leap of working long hours to get a comic project done and work part-time on commissions or commit to other work to support myself financially through this process.

To prepare for professional freelancing, I have started doing private commissions for clients in my own time, using my tabletop gaming hobby to gather a target audience. My first large-scale comic project has begun its first edition, and the next steps include continuing the narrative as well as the self-promotion and merchandise. I have also built up my own website and multiple social media sites as a portfolio to get my work out there. The next part of my plan is to gather enough interest in my comic to begin crowdfunding for its development into its full potential - a multi-issue series developed by a full team of passionate and hardworking fellow illustrators. In the far future, I would be proud to potentially see a new comics studio emerge from my efforts. A comics renaissance led by indie developers is something that I would love to see. I believe that the medium of comics is capable of incredible storytelling with flexibility in the many genres they can do justice for. Not everything needs to be adapted into a live action show to be recognised. This recognition is worth working for, and therefore I will gladly tackle this project on my own and continue this effort to carve out my future in art and illustration.
