Chelsey Lau

"My name is Chelsey, an enthusiastic individual with a passion for general artistry. This passion leads to taking pride in graphic design. I have always been creative. At a young age, I started taking an interest in art which then led onto finding an enjoyment out of drawing. I was heavily engrossed in YouTube, cartoons and games, eventually coming across video and photo editing. From there onwards, I taught myself Photoshop and After Effects, therefore designing graphics and creating motion graphics throughout my teenage years. This became the reason why I chose to pursue graphic design. As a result of dabbling in After Effects at a young age, one of my specialisms is motion graphics. However I also specialise in illustration, such as illustrating assets used for different projects. Aside from motion graphics illustration, I also specialise in poster design. As part of my creative process, I tend to look at visual references such as work from other designers on Behance. After doing so, I start my research on aspects relevant to the project, which influence my decisions made in the planning and designing process. Finally, in terms of my influences, this ranges from my heritage to other known graphic designers. Being a person with Chinese heritage, there are aspects about this that influence my design at times like Chinese aesthetics, culture and design. When it comes to other designers that have influenced me, I take inspiration from the title sequence designers Saul Bass and Pablo Ferro. Aside from these two motion designers, Stefan Sagmeister and David Carson influence me as well. My career aspirations stem from my background with motion graphics. I therefore aspire to pursue motion graphics as a job, more specifically creating title sequences for film and television. Although other aspects of motion graphics as a career also intrigue me, such as creating advertisements, promotional videos and animating logos. Regarding my favourite aspects about the course, I have really enjoyed how students are given live brief opportunities to tackle. This is because it gives students a taste of the graphic design industry, and how it feels to work with actual clients while working towards meeting their needs and deadlines. In addition, I also liked the opportunity to create our own negotiated briefs, as this was a new experience for me and a change from being given briefs."
