This EU funded project (which provides a Marie Sklodowska-Curie Fellowship for Dr K. Papathanisou) is aimed at encapsulating semiconducting nanoparticles within porous metal phosphonate frameworks.
The electronic structure of the nanoparticles provides a mechanism to generate light either excitation either by an applied voltage or by illumination with high energy (UV) light; the absorption properties of the materials can be tuned by altering the composition of the nanoparticles. Similarly, when embedded within a photovoltaic device these materials provide a means to generate solar energy.
The framework allows dispersion of the nanoparticles and provides protection from air and moisture.
