Employability presentation

The Employability Presentation element is a key component of the Gold Wolverhampton Enterprise and Employability Award (WEEA). It will assess and allow you to develop both your career planning skills and your presentation skills.

You will be required to put together a detailed career development plan and to communicate this plan in the form of a presentation. Your presentation should outline your key strengths, how these relate to your career plans, and the specific steps you will take in achieving your career goals.

Presentations - why are they important?

The skills and qualities you will get to practise and demonstrate during the presentation include:

  • Interpersonal skills
  • Good written and spoken communication skills
  • Confidence
  • Professional appearance and behaviour
  • Ability to organise, analyse and present information effectively
  • Enthusiasm and energy

These skills and qualities include some of those most in demand from graduate employers and are invaluable during the recruitment process and in the workplace. Many recruiters use presentations as part of their selection process, either in interviews or as part of assessment centres.

Presenting also forms an important part of many jobs, whether as a formal presentation or presenting ideas to colleagues in a meeting. This task will help you to develop the skills needed by going through the process of preparing and delivering a presentation to an audience. Very few people are naturally highly skilled presenters. Actually going through the process of preparing and delivering presentations, and gaining feedback is the best way to improve your presentation skills. Completing this task will help you to start developing these skills and increase your confidence.

The Career Plan – why is important?

Putting a career plan together will help you to identify where you are now, where you want to be and what you need to do to get there. It will also help to you identify any barriers to achieving your goals (such as lack of experience or a particular skill) so that you can address these now and start plugging these gaps. Identifying your key strengths is an important part of career planning, helping you with career decision making and links back to the self-awareness which you will have undertaken in the Silver award.

We all have ideas in our head about what we would like to achieve, but coming up with a formal career plan keeps you on track and means you are more likely to achieve your goals.

Creating a career action plan will also help you to be proactive in shaping discussions with your tutor, careers adviser and maybe later on with a future employer for work experience or employment purposes.
