Matt Belcher

The degree was a Bachelor of Science (Honours) in Sports Coaching Practice which allowed me to study a mix of practical and theoretical modules. My degree contained modules such as Applied Sports Science, Optimising Training and Performance and most importantly for myself Performance analysis. Using the knowledge I learnt from these modules I was able to undertake a successful work placement at Birmingham City Ladies which provided me with a foothold in elite sport. I still draw upon the knowledge and guidance I gained from the attending the University of Wolverhampton in my current role as Recruitment Analyst at West Bromwich Albion Football Club. Both my Sports Coaching and my Masters in Research (Sport) degrees  provided me with an in depth understanding of not only performance analysis, but other aspects of sport such as, coaching, sports science, biomechanics and psychology which have all assisted me on my career path, giving me confidence to also lecture in these areas.

Leeroy Watson

During my time as an undergraduate on the BSc Sports Coaching Practice course I found that there were numerous opportunities in and around the course to improve myself as a coach. During the middle part of my first year of studies I was able to be mentored by a certified strength and conditioning (S&C) coach who was working with British Judo.

By the second year I was able to get involved with delivering S&C warm-ups and sessions for various sports (judo, netball, track and field and rugby). It was hard juggling all the outside practical experience I was getting with my studies; however, the lecturers were supportive.

During my final year I was working with an apprentice program for judo. This experience set up one of the many jobs I am now doing since graduating. Throughout the three years of study we are mentored and become mentors. I really liked being able to help and support the first and second year students. As a result I am now a paid teaching assistant at the University – having my PGCE paid for as well!

The course gave me everything I could “eat” and I was able to take those experiences and turn them into many opportunities for employment in sport. I feel the knowledge gained from the course was, wide ranging and relevant, with the practical experience of the lecturers being another valuable resource from which I could draw from. I would recommend this course to anyone with coaching aspirations or an interest in sharing sport with others.
