This course is ideal if you wish to proceed to a PGCE or School Direct with a subject specialism in Physical Education (PE).The aim of this degree is to equip you with the applied practical skills and teaching skills required to pursue a career in education.

You will study applied practical skills, child development and work-based practice, ultimately providing you with the knowledge and skills needed to teach PE. You will also study current issues in education, how children learn and develop, and how to plan and deliver practical sessions. You will have the opportunity to develop your practical skills within a range of sports and physical activities, enabling you to examine the place of PE within the school curriculum.

What happens on the course?

You will study applied practical skills, child development, pedagogical skills and work-based practice. The course involves both practical and theoretical study of the techniques and skills involved in teaching. In addition, you will study current issues in education, how children learn and develop, and how to plan and deliver practical sessions. Work-based learning and placements are central to this course, and you will gain experiences of primary and secondary school PE activities, working with younger children and adolescents.

In your third year, you will complete an individual project, based on a topic of your choice, as you prepare to embark on your teaching career. You will also explore a range of philosophies, historical viewpoints, current issues and comparative perspectives of PE.

 

Potential Career Paths

As a graduate of this course, you could proceed to a PGCE or School Direct and train to become a teacher with a specialism in PE. This course also provides the basis for a career in education, and other sectors such as sports coaching and youth related work. If you do wish to pursue a career in teaching you should be fully prepared to undertake a postgraduate qualification in order to gain Qualified Teacher Status (QTS). Upon completion of the PGCE or School Direct, you will be well equipped and qualified to undertake a teaching career.

You will become equipped with a substantial knowledge of teaching and a set of skills and values to advance your career prospects, and take a substantial role in regional, national and international communities through PE teaching.

Practical competency and teaching skills are core to the BA (Hons) in Physical Education. These aspects are supported by an understanding of children and educational issues acquired in lectures and a variety of school placements. Throughout your studies, you will use a broad range of information technology to facilitate effective studies in PE, which will be vital for your future career. Work-based learning and placements are central to this course, and you will be required to teach across the six National Curriculum activity areas, which will be formally assessed as part of your degree.

As a graduate of this course you will be able to:

  • use advanced technologies and systems to promote effective teaching of Physical Education and other related careers
  • demonstrate the necessary practical competency to pursue postgraduate routes into Physical Education teaching
  • critique, analyse and apply knowledge of the political, historical, and current issues in education and sport within schools
  • apply knowledge of how children develop and learn to assist in the planning and teaching of Physical Education
  • use knowledge of teaching combined with a set of enterprising skills and values that will advance your career prospects. In addition you will be able to take a substantial role in regional, national and international communities through Physical Education teaching.

Additional Course Costs

Mandatory Costs

  • Enhanced DBS required at a minimum cost of £40. The cost of the DBS is determined by the Government and further information can be found here - GOV.UK / Disclosure and Barring Service.
  • Uniform is provided for this course, however the University of Wolverhampton reserves the right to charge for extra uniform should this be required.
  • You will be required to provide appropriate foot wear at a cost of approximately  £50-£60

  • Various certified courses are available via My Course + More, ranging from £0 - £200.

Other Requirements

Students will be expected to demonstrate an interest or enthusiasm for variety of sporting activities and be able to swim 25 metres on your back and front using recognised strokes.

Entry to this course requires a Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) Check and an Occupational Health Check.

If you have accepted a Conditional Offer made by the University of Wolverhampton you will receive correspondence asking you to complete an enhanced Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) check. The charge for this will be a DBS fee of £40.00 and a £6.00 ID check service fee. You will also need to complete a physical activity readiness questionnaire prior to starting the course.

''Physical Education develops you holistically and it’s not only about the practical side but when we get in the sports hall we develop our theoretical knowledge and we put it in practice across all domains. The UK Government has confirmed that EU students will continue to be eligible for 'home fee status' for entry in September 2020, and will continue to have access to financial support available via student loans for the duration of their course. Your employer, embassy or organisation can pay for your Tuition fees:

If your employer, embassy or organisation agrees to pay all or part of your tuition fees; the University will refer to them as your sponsor and will invoice them for the appropriate amount.

We must receive notification of sponsorship in writing as soon as possible, and before enrolment, confirming that the sponsor will pay your tuition fees.


Financial Hardship:

Students can apply to the Dennis Turner Opportunity Fund. for help with course related costs however this cannot be used for fees or to cover general living costs.
