About CALMERIC

CALMERIC is linked to the University’s School of Engineering, which has established an internationally renowned capability in Additive Layer Manufacturing at its Telford Campus and over the last year has invested a further £10m in buildings and facilities; including a wind tunnel, autoclave, 3D printing and laboratories dedicated to metrology and materials.

CALMERIC further enhances the resources supporting composites and additive layer technologies, and will support the development of a research team to build the innovation capacity of Shropshire and Staffordshire manufacturing companies by giving them access to these specialist skills and resources. The common thread linking composites and additive layer materials is that in both cases the engineering approach to designing a new component is simultaneous consideration of both the form and the material structure to deliver optimum performance.

Research and innovation projects supported by the CALMERIC project will be delivered by a team of existing academic specialists and new researchers employed through the project to work on research collaborations with SMEs. The academic leadership team of Prof Hasan and Prof Pollard have international reputations in Composite and Additive Layer Materials through their current and historical research activities, and also direct and current experience of ERDF project management.  An additional 5 specialist composites and additive layer materials research staff have now been recruited to strengthen this team, alongside additional capital investment in specialist materials manufacturing and testing equipment. 

The CALMERIC project is presently contracted from January 2019 to December 2021
