Professor Amar Aggoun is currently the Dean of Faculty of Science and Engineering and Professor of Visual Computing at the University of Wolverhampton. He received the "Ingenieur d'état" degree in Electronics Engineering from Ecole Nationale Polytechnique d'Alger (Algiers, Algeria) and a PhD degree in Electronic Engineering from the University of Nottingham. Amar has an extensive experience of learning, teaching, research and knowledge transfer activities within the UK HE sector spanning over 27 years.  During this period, he took on various roles in five UK universities, namely University of Nottingham, De Montfort University, Brunel University London, University of Bedfordshire and University of Wolverhampton.  At Brunel University, he founded the Digital Design and Technology division in the School of Engineering and Design where he led and managed both Teaching and Research activities which led to programmes accredited by Creative Skillset and significant increase in external income.

Amar spent three years from 2013-2016 as Head of School of Computer Science and Technology and director of the Institute of Research in Applicable Computing at the University of Bedfordshire.  The School focused on four key areas, namely Computer Science, Creative Technologies, Electronic and Telecom Engineering, and Construction Management and Building Technologies.  He successful led he school to its best NSS results and significant increase in research income from various sources such the EU commission, UK research council, Home office, innovate UK and Industry.

He Joined the University of Wolverhampton in October 2016 first as Head of School of Mathematics and Computer Science and led the school to its best NSS results performing well above the sector average in all TEF metrics related to NSS as well as a significant increase of external income generation. Amar became Dean of the Faculty of Science and Engineering in April 2020. 

Amar’s research in visual computing has received worldwide recognition through numerous media reporting and invitations as guest/keynote speaker/exhibitor at numerous conferences and exhibitions. He has successfully secured and delivered contracts worth in excess of £14M in external income generation, funded by the European Union, UKRI, OfS, HEFCE and Industry. Amongst the many successful projects, Amar was the principle coordinator and manager of a project sponsored by the EU-FP7 ICT-4-1.5-Networked Media and 3D Internet, namely Live Immerse Video-Audio Interactive Multimedia (3D VIVANT) http://cordis.europa.eu/project/rcn/94148_en.html). This was a 3.5 years project which involved 9 partners from 7 EU countries. He has been awarded the IET Biometrics Premium award 2017. He is the faculty lead for the development and establishment of the Midlands Centre for Cybersecurity in Hereford.  He also set up the cybersecurity research agenda which led to the establishment of the Wolverhampton Cyber Research Institute.  In 2017, he secured funding from the Office for Students to develop a training programme in cybersecurity.  This led to the validation of the MSc in Cybersecurity and a suite of CPDs.  More recently he secured funding from OfS to establish two conversion MSc programmes in Artificial Intelligence and Data Science.  

As well as leading projects involving multi-company and multi-research institutes, he also led two collaborative research projects with Princeton University (US) from 1999 to 2004 and contributed to two white papers for the European Commission on the Future Internet.  He was associate editor of the IEEE Journal of Display Technologies. He has supervised (as the director of study) 31 PhD students to successful completion of their studies. Amar was a submitting staff member for the RAE/REF 1996 & 2001 (De Montfort University), 2008 (Brunel University) and 2014 (University of Bedfordshire).  He is currently leading the UoA11 REF2021 submission for the University of Wolverhampton.

Amar has more than 30 years’ experience in the development of hardware and software solutions for Signal processing, imaging and computer vision systems.  Areas of research interests include
