Professor Julia Clarke

Appointed in January 2020, Julia is putting students first to maximise opportunity; driving economic and social transformation in the Wolverhampton region and beyond.

Prior to working in higher education, Julia qualified as a chartered accountant at Ernst & Young where she specialised in corporate taxation. She has previously worked at the University of Central Lancashire, the University of Leeds and Manchester Metropolitan University. As Pro-Vice Chancellor for Business and Law at Manchester Metropolitan University, Julia played a leading role in the University’s introduction of degree apprenticeships and developed its digital transnational education portfolio. 

Julia has taught financial accounting, corporate governance and business ethics across a range of programmes and levels. She was a founding member of the Centre for Excellence in Teaching and Learning in Inter-Disciplinary Ethics Applied.  At Leeds, she established the sector-leading Nurturing Talent Mentoring Scheme, based on her research into mentoring and social capital. She has overseen the development of both student and staff mentoring programmes in higher education.

Julia is an active participant in the business education community and served as the Chair of Council of the Chartered Association of Business Schools in 2018-19. She chaired the Business and Law Panel for the national Teaching Excellence Framework subject pilot.

Julia holds a degree in History and French from the University of Manchester, a Post-Graduate Certificate in Higher Education from the University of Leeds and a Doctorate in Education from the University of Liverpool. She is a Principal Fellow of the Higher Education Academy.
