Tayabah Mahmood

Student Governor

1st Term of office

Born and raised in West Yorkshire, Tayabah Mahmood joined the University of Wolverhampton in 2019 studying towards a degree in Biomedical Science. Her first year took an unexpected turn when COVID-19 hit, and the delivery of Higher Education changed overnight. Tayabah quickly recognised the importance of championing the student voice within university decision-making and, as Course Representative, became an invaluable liaison between staff and students. She continued to build key relationships with peers and initiated a platform for students to network during quarantine. Tayabah subsequently received the title of ‘Faculty of Science and Engineering Course Rep of the Year 2020/21’ at the Students’ Union Awards.

Hoping to build on this, Tayabah successfully ran for Students’ Union President after numerous nominations. Now, as a Student Governor of the University and part of the Corporate Management Board, she aims to continually monitor the impact that the pandemic has had on student wellbeing and ensure student experience remains at the forefront as we transition back to normality. Additionally, she is eager to spearhead the implementation of the new Students’ Union strategic plan and help support the university in its drive towards Vision 2030.

As a woman from the Islamic faith, living with Multiple Sclerosis, Tayabah’s long-term vision is to champion hidden disabilities and deliver more inclusive services, in hopes to raise awareness and motivate students with similar battles. She is also enthusiastic about launching ‘Culture Fusion’, an initiative to celebrate the diversity within the student body, showcasing different aspects of cultural activities and hosting a series of collaborative events. Tayabah is very family-oriented and outside of her studies, likes learning languages. She is a quadrilingual and is currently learning Arabic.
